BULLSHIT=spin=PR=disinformation.
Whatever the word, someone out there is trying to
hoodwink, bamboozle or mislead you. Sometimes the justification for
disinformation is national interest but often it is driven by personal,
commercial or partisan interests. The single most powerful tool for fighting back is the Disinfopedia. Modeled on the web encyclopedia, the Wikipedia, it was launched at the start of 2003. It uses the same software as the Wikipedia and has the same open-to-all policy. It is free and any surfer can edit any article in it simply by clicking a link. The American Heritage Dictionary defines disinformation as "deliberately misleading information announced publicly or leaked by a government or especially by an intelligence agency in order to influence public opinion or the government in another nation." The Disinfopedia is a collaborative project to produce a directory of public relations firms, think tanks, industry-funded organizations and industry-friendly experts that work to influence public opinion and public policy on behalf of corporations, governments and special interests. Disinfopedia carries a link to Spin of the Day, a site that tries to kill off spin doctoring projects in their infancy. |
